FAQs (Based on 2026 Policies):
-
Q: Do I need the TTP to buy flight/train tickets?
A: Yes. You must have the TTP to purchase tickets to Tibet. Since March 2026, you must present the original copy for both flights and trains. -
Q: Will my visa say "Does not include Tibet"?
A: No, standard Chinese visas do not carry this annotation. With a valid visa and a TTP, you are legally cleared for Tibet. -
Q: Can I fly to Lhasa and apply for the TTP there?
A: Absolutely not. Without the original TTP in hand, airlines and train stations will deny you boarding. -
Q: Do children need their own TTP?
A: Yes. Every child (including infants) must have their own passport and a birth certificate copy to be included in the group's TTP application. -
Q: Do Overseas Chinese (foreign citizens) need a TTP?
A: Yes. Anyone with a foreign passport follows the foreigner protocol. If you still hold a Chinese passport but your household registration (ID) is canceled, you can enter Tibet but cannot obtain a Border Permit, meaning you cannot visit Everest or Ngari. -
Q: Does the TTP get stamped in my passport?
A: No. It is an independent A4 document. It leaves no marks on your passport. -
Q: Can I enter Tibet overland from Nepal?
A: Yes (you need a TTP and a Group Visa), but note that due to landslides in August 2026, the Gyirong and Zhangmu borders are currently closed. Check for official reopening updates. -
Q: Can I leave Tibet after my TTP expires?
A: In principle, no. The dates on the TTP are fixed. Extensions are extremely rare and only granted for severe emergencies (illness, extreme weather), requiring a brand-new application. -
Q: Can I change my dates or itinerary once the TTP is issued?
A: No. Once issued, the TTP cannot be altered. Any changes mean you must re-apply from scratch. Confirm your dates before submitting.
While the dual "Visa + Permit" process might sound daunting, it becomes remarkably simple once you grasp the core logic: apply normally for your visa without mentioning Tibet, and leave all Tibet-related logistics to the experts.
From submitting your TTP, securing Border Permits, and booking foreign-related hotels, to arranging licensed guides and private vehicles—a reliable local agency will seamlessly connect all the administrative dots for you. All you need to do is prepare your body and mind for the breathtaking wonders of the Tibetan Plateau.
