According to policy of Tibet Tourism Bureau, traveler can not apply the Tibet Travel Permit on his(her) own. He(she) has to book tour service from a certificated agency, and let the agency apply the permit.
How to Apply for a Tibet Travel Permit (Step-by-Step)
Rule #1: You cannot apply for a TTP by yourself. The Tibet Tourism Bureau does not accept individual applications. You MUST book a tour through a legally registered Tibetan travel agency.
Step 1: Provide Your Travel Details
Contact us with your planned travel dates, your entry method (flight, train, or overland from Nepal), and your desired destinations. This determines your itinerary, which is frozen once the permit is issued.
Step 2: Confirm the Tour and Pay a Deposit
We will design a day-by-day itinerary and a full package quote. You pay a deposit via PayPal, Wise, or Bank Transfer. Once paid, we lock in your spot.
Step 3: Submit Your Documents
You need to provide clear, color scans or high-quality photos of:
Your passport photo page (valid for at least 6 months).
Your Chinese Visa.
For Taiwanese: Your Taiwan Compatriot Permit.
For travelers 65 years old and above: A designated medical health certificate.
For students/workers: A letter from your school/employer.
Step 4: We Apply in Lhasa
We submit your documents to the Tibet Tourism Bureau. We track the process daily and will notify you immediately if any supplemental documents are needed.
Step 5: Receive the Original Permit
Once approved, we courier the original physical TTP to your hotel in mainland China (e.g., Chengdu) via EMS. It takes about 1-3 days. You must have this original copy in hand before boarding your flight or train to Tibet.
Processing Time: Standard processing is 8–10 working days. We recommend starting the process 15–20 working days before your departure. (In peak season—July, August, and the first week of October—allow even more time).
2026 Critical Policy Updates (You Must Know)
Tibet travel policies are highly dynamic. Here are the latest updates as of October 2026:
March 2026: Normal Processing Resumed
Unlike previous years where March was a "restricted month" for foreign tourists, permits were processed normally in March 2026.
March 13, 2026: Strict Original Copy Rule
Since March 13, 2026, ALL foreign and Taiwanese travelers entering Tibet—whether by train or by air—MUST present the original physical TTP. In the past, a photocopy was acceptable for train travel. This rule is now dead.
May 2026: Processing Delays
Due to the Saga Dawa Festival, local Lhasa government events, and the massive Year of the Horse pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, processing times in May 2026 were extended by 5–7 days.
August 2026: Nepal Border Closed
Due to severe landslides, the land border between Tibet and Nepal (Gyirong and Zhangmu ports) was temporarily closed. Travelers planning to enter Tibet from Kathmandu must check our website for reopening updates.
No "Solo" Permits
The old rumor that you must form a group of 5-6 people is false. We can apply for a permit even if you are traveling alone. However, joining a small group tour saves money and increases approval chances.
